How to Update Your Aadhaar Address Online

Step-by-step guide to updating the address on Aadhaar online, the documents UIDAI accepts, and the mistakes that cause rejection.

If you have moved house, you can update the address on your Aadhaar online through the myAadhaar portal without visiting an Aadhaar centre. All you need is a mobile number linked to your Aadhaar and a valid proof of your new address.

Who can update online

Any Aadhaar holder whose mobile number is linked to Aadhaar. The OTP for login and submission is sent to that number. If your mobile is not linked, you must first visit an Aadhaar enrolment centre.

Documents UIDAI accepts as address proof

  • Passport
  • Bank passbook or statement with the bank's stamp
  • Electricity, water, gas or landline bill not older than three months
  • Registered rent or lease agreement
  • Voter ID or ration card

The document must be in your own name, spelled the same way as on Aadhaar. If you do not have a proof in your name, you can use the Head of Family (HOF) route, where a family member who already has the address on their Aadhaar approves your request, along with a proof of relationship such as a ration card or marriage certificate.

Steps

  1. Log in to myAadhaar with your Aadhaar number and OTP.
  2. Choose Address Update and enter the new address exactly as it appears on your proof.
  3. Upload a clear scan or photo of the proof.
  4. Pay the fee (₹50, unless UIDAI is running a free-update period).
  5. Note the Update Request Number (URN) to track your request.

Common reasons for rejection

  • The name on the proof does not match Aadhaar.
  • The bill is older than three months.
  • The image is blurred, cropped or the address is not fully readable.
  • A notarised (unregistered) rent agreement is used.

How long it takes

Most updates are completed in 5 to 15 days, although UIDAI allows up to 30 days. Once approved, download the updated e-Aadhaar from the same portal.

Note that name, date of birth, photo, biometric and mobile number changes cannot be done online; these require a visit to an Aadhaar centre.

Please noteRules, fees and timelines are set by the relevant authorities and can change. Always confirm on the official portal before applying. Kritz's Digital Solution is a private assistance service and is not affiliated with any government body.
