GST Registration Documents Checklist for Proprietors
Who needs GST registration, the documents a sole proprietor needs, how the process works and why some applications get queries.
GST registration gives your business a 15-character GSTIN. The first two digits are your state code; the next ten are your PAN.
Who must register
- Businesses supplying goods with annual turnover above ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh in some special category states)
- Service providers with turnover above ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in some special category states)
- Anyone making inter-state taxable supplies of goods or selling through e-commerce operators, regardless of turnover in most cases
Thresholds and exceptions change from time to time, so confirm your case before applying. Many businesses also register voluntarily to work with larger clients.
Documents for a sole proprietor
- PAN and Aadhaar of the proprietor
- Passport-size photograph
- Proof of business address: electricity bill, property tax receipt, or rent agreement with the owner's consent letter
- Bank account proof: cancelled cheque or first page of passbook/statement
- Mobile number and email for OTP verification
The process
- Part A: PAN, mobile and email verification on the GST portal.
- Part B: business details, address, bank details and document uploads.
- Aadhaar authentication of the proprietor.
- Officer verification; the GSTIN is issued if no query is raised.
Why applications receive queries
- Address proof in a different name without a proper consent letter
- Mismatch between PAN, Aadhaar and application details
- Unclear uploads
In some states, applicants may be asked for biometric verification at a GST Suvidha Kendra or a physical site verification. Check your state's current process before you begin.
