PAN Card for a Minor: Eligibility and Documents
When a child needs a PAN, who signs the application, which documents are required and what happens when the child turns 18.
There is no minimum age for a PAN. A child may need one when investing in mutual funds or shares, opening certain bank deposits, receiving income in their name, or being named in a property transaction.
Who applies
A parent or legal guardian applies on the child's behalf as the representative assessee. The child does not sign the form; the parent's signature and details are used.
Documents required
- Child's Aadhaar (proof of identity and address)
- Child's birth certificate, if Aadhaar shows only the year of birth
- Child's recent passport-size photograph
- Parent's or guardian's Aadhaar and PAN
Applying paperlessly
The application can be completed online and signed electronically when the required Aadhaar is linked to a mobile number for OTP verification. Otherwise, a signed physical form must be sent, which takes longer.
When the child turns 18
A minor's PAN card does not carry a photograph or signature. After turning 18, the holder should apply for a PAN update with their own photo and signature. The PAN number itself stays the same for life.
Common mistakes
- Different spellings of the child's name on Aadhaar and the birth certificate
- Using the parent's date of birth instead of the child's
- Applying for a second PAN when one already exists
