Udyam (MSME) Registration: Documents and Process
What Udyam registration is, who needs it, the documents required and how to register on the official portal free of cost.
Udyam registration is the official MSME registration of the Government of India. It is free, fully online and usually completed the same day. Many banks, government schemes and tender portals ask for an Udyam certificate.
Who should register
Any business engaged in manufacturing, services or trade, whether it is a proprietorship, partnership, LLP or company. Businesses are classified as micro, small or medium based on investment and turnover.
Benefits
- Easier access to collateral-free loans and priority-sector lending
- Eligibility for state and central subsidies and schemes
- Protection against delayed payments from buyers under the MSMED Act
- Preference in some government tenders
Documents and details required
- Aadhaar of the proprietor, managing partner or director
- PAN of the business (for a proprietorship, the owner's PAN)
- GSTIN, where applicable
- Bank account number and IFSC
- Business address, start date, number of employees
- Approximate investment in plant and machinery or equipment, and turnover
- The correct NIC code describing your activity
Steps
- Open the official portal udyamregistration.gov.in.
- Verify the Aadhaar of the owner with OTP.
- Validate the PAN and enter business details.
- Select NIC codes for your activities.
- Submit with a final OTP; the certificate is issued online.
Points to remember
Only one Udyam registration is allowed per PAN. If you already hold an older Udyog Aadhaar, migrate it instead of registering again. Avoid websites that charge large fees while looking like the government portal; the government itself charges nothing.
