How to Find Unclaimed Bank Deposits with RBI UDGAM
What unclaimed deposits are, how to search for them on the RBI UDGAM portal and how families can claim money after a death.
When a savings account, fixed deposit or current account has no activity for ten years, the bank moves the balance to the RBI's Depositor Education and Awareness Fund. The money still belongs to the depositor or their legal heirs and can be claimed at any time.
What is UDGAM?
UDGAM (Unclaimed Deposits – Gateway to Access inforMation) is the RBI's central portal for searching unclaimed deposits across many banks in one place, instead of contacting each bank separately.
How to search
- Register on udgam.rbi.org.in with your mobile number and OTP.
- Enter the account holder's name and the bank (or select all banks).
- Add one more identifier: PAN, date of birth, voter ID, passport or driving licence.
- Review the results, which show the bank and a reference number.
Claiming the money
The claim is made at any branch of the bank holding the deposit. The account holder needs KYC documents. If the holder has died, the nominee or legal heirs need the death certificate, their own KYC and, where there is no nominee, documents proving legal heirship as required by the bank.
Tips
- Search under different spellings and initials of the name.
- Search for parents and grandparents too; old fixed deposits are often forgotten.
- The search is free on the official portal; never pay anyone who claims to "release" RBI funds for a fee.
